Thick toenails are simply when one or more nails have become thickened, this can lead to them being difficult to cut, uncomfortable and sometimes considered unsightly. If a nail is particularly thick and goes left untreated, the excess pressure from footwear onto the nail may lead to tissue breakdown to the nail bed which lies underneath the nail plate.
Fungal nail infections is probably the the most common cause of a thickened nail. Toenails often harden and thicken with age due to a reduction in circulation and blood flow to the toes. Excess pressure from footwear causing multiple microtrauma trauma, or single injury forces such as ‘stubbing the toe’ to the nail which can cause scarification and damage to the nail root, resulting in permanent abnormality to the nail growth. Systemic medical conditions such as psoriasis can also contribute to nail thickening.
A nail will be thickened than average, it may be discoloured and difficult to cut with regular house-house nail cutting instruments. Discomfort may be experienced under the nail from bruising and pressure caused by footwear.
A podiatrist will provide a thorough examination of the feet, their skin and nail conditions. They will take a thorough medical and social history to best figure a diagnoses and possible cause for the presenting condition. Podiatrist can treat thickened nails and there are a range of treatments here used to help with problematic thick nails, treatment will vary dependent on the particular cause and what outcome the patient wishes to receive. Unfortunately, in many cases where the nail matrix (root) is damaged, the damage is permanent and the nail does not return to its former structure. Nail reconstruction is a particularly good option in this case for those wishing for a cosmetic solution.
Following an assessment with a podiatrist; advice will be offered on the most suitable and beneficial treatment options available. Regular routine podiatry treatments are often advised to keep on top of troublesome nails to keep them neat and comfortable.
