Nail surgery is a minor procedure performed under a local anaesthetic, to remove a portion of, or the entire nail plate. This procedure may be recommended for problematic nails, such as ingrowing toenails, fungal nail infection or a painful, deformed nail. A chemical called phenol is used to destroy the nail matrix (at the root where the cells of the nail are made) to prevent it from growing and causing the same problem in the future, this is called chemical matrixectomy.
Some people may not require the chemical matrixectomy and only need a portion or the whole nail removing temporarily, in acute circumstances such as trauma to the nail, or an attempt at self treatment which has exacerbated the problem.
Anyone who has a nail which is causing pain or problems.
Some examples are;
1 An full general and medical assessment is undertaken first. If the podiatrist deems the procedure to be suitable, nail surgery will be booked in at a later date.
2 On the day of the nail surgery, the podiatrist will have a discussion prior to the procedure and a consent form signed.
3 The toe is cleansed ready for the procedure.
4 A local anaesthetic is injected into the toe - the procedure will be pain free following this.
5 A tight rubber band (tourniquet) is applied around the base of the toe to reduce blood flow.
6 The whole or part of the nail is removed.
7 The chemical phenol is applied if this was indicated at the assessment.
8 The tourniquet is removed, podiatrist will monitor that the circulation has returned to the toe.
9 The toe is dressed.
10 A review appointment will be booked.
