Osgood-Schlatter disease is a condition affecting the knee, usually amongst children and teenagers. It is a overuse injury rather than a disease, producing discomfort just below the knee cap. It is a traction apophysitis, which means inflammation where a tendon and its muscle insert into bone. Osgood-Schlatter disease usually occurs around the pubertal growth spurt in children, when the quadriceps (front thigh muscles) have enlarged, but the tendon inserting just below the knee, has not yet fused to the bone. It is seen particularly in young athletes who take part in sports which involve repeated knee flexion and forced extension. Males are more prone to the disease than females, but symptoms present earlier in girls than in boys.
Usually it happens during a growth spurt, and commonly due to overuse of the knee. It happens usually in children due to its association with growth and development.
