Some joints which have multiple ligaments around them connect bone to bone form, forming a joint capsule. Capsulitis is when these ligaments become inflamed, due to excessive force or stress through a joint. It most commonly occurs in at the base of the second toe but can occur in any joint capsule. If capsulitis is left untreated, it can lead to weakening of the ligaments around the joint and pose a risk of joint dislocation.
Capsulitis is usually contributed from too much force put through the joints in the foot. This force may come from, inappropriate footwear, trauma, or abnormal foot mechanics. Those with certain medical conditions such as arthritis, are at risk of developing capsulitis, as this condition is predisposed to inflammation within the joints.
Those with capsulitis may describe a nagging pain around the inflamed capsule. Usually around the top and/or bottom of the base of the affected toe. Stretching and movement of the toes up or down, or during walking will produce discomfort.
A podiatrist at would begin by taking a thorough history, which would include your past medical history as well as a history of the problem itself. Our podiatrists will then use this information, along with a thorough examination of the area to form a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis of capsulitis has been decided the following treatment options may be considered:
The aim of treatment for capsulitis is to reduce stress to the foot, most therapist will intitially recommend conservative treatment to accomplish this, such as; icing your affected foot, wearing foot pads and cushion orthoses, and avoiding any heels or any shoes that lack support.
