Plantar fasciitis or plantar fasciopathy is the most common cause of heel pain, referring to inflammation of the plantar fascia/plantar aponeurosis. The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of connective tissue that helps to maintain the arch of the foot and aids shock absorption when walking. It originates from the heel bone (calcaneus) and insert and wraps around the head of the metatarsals (balls of the foot).
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions presented at podiatry clinics. It is a multifactorial condition, meaning there are numerous factors and risks which can lead to the development of plantar fasciitis. It is an overuse condition of the plantar fascia where it has been overworked, micro tears occur within the tissue and inflammation leads to discomfort, usually at the heel where it originates from, but can be experienced anywhere along the plantar fascia.

They may perform tests in order to replicate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Once a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis has been made it is important to look at the reasons behind its development.
