Iliotibial band syndrome may also be referred to as runners knee, it is inflammation of the iliotibial band, this is a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue which runs from the outer hip, down the the do the outside of the knee. Iliotibial band syndrome is considered as a non-traumatic overuse condition.
Iliotibial band syndrome is most frequently seen in active people, particularly runners, cyclist or other athletes. It is considered as one of the most common overuse injuries amongst runners. Those submitted to repetitive flexion and extension movements of the knee, this repeated motion contributes to excessive friction between a bony prominence on the outer knee called the lateral epicondyle, and the iliotibial band. The friction between these two areas is where symptoms are most often experienced.

It can be described as a burning pain around the outside of the knee, typically at its worst in the morning, and aggravated by walking down stairs or hills. It may be accompanied by inflammation and swelling to the outside of the knee.
Podiatry for iliotibial band syndrome would obtaining a thorough history, a personal account of the problem, an examination and a biomechanical assessment.
The purpose of a biomechanical assessment is to assess how the foot and the lower limb are functioning, the aim of which is to correct any abnormal biomechanics that are contributing to painful symptoms.
The treatment for iliotibial syndrome is usually non-surgical, but is some cases in where conservative treatment and physical therapy have remained ineffective, surgery may be indicated.
It has been proven that anti-inflammatory drugs and/or corticosteroids injections in the bursae or trigger points can be used to reduce the acute inflammatory response and pain.
