Osteoarthritis is considered degenerative condition, it can affect any joint in the body and is usually due to wear and tear, resulting in a breakdown of cartilage due to repeated stress on a joint. Cartilage is found at the ends of bones which meet to form a joint, it acts as a cushion and protect the underlying bone from forces which may be applied to it. The pain associated with osteoarthritis is due to inflammation of the joint associated with this wear.
Osteoarthritis is often association with repetitive stress to a joint and the ageing process, although it can also occur due to an injury or trauma to a joint.
